Regardless of his recent lung cancer diagnosis, Steven was sentenced to ten years in a Missouri state prison for growing cannabis. At trial, his public defender argued for leniency, noting that Missouri had legalized medical marijuana in the intervening years and that the state stood little to gain from imprisoning a seriously sick man. The judge disagreed. Steven had requested compassionate release from the parole board, but passed before a decision was made.
He died just one month shy of his 60th birthday. Thank you to everyone who donated to LPP's covid relief fund which helped to ensure the family could cover his funeral expenses.
